The National Football League has set the salary cap number for the 2021 season.  It is $182.5 million.  That a drop of almost $16 million from the 2020 season.

The drop was caused by COVID-19 and the money lost through lack of ticket sales and a drop in TV ratings.  It is the biggest drop in the cap since it came into existence in the early 1990's.

The Detroit Lions now are about $9.5 million under the cap, according to spotrac.com.  The team has released defensive back Desmond Trufant (pictured, #23) and linebacker Christian Jones this offseason.

They are expected to let go of other veterans so they can use that money to sign other free agents and their draft picks from this spring's NFL Draft.  NFL free agency starts next week.
