Lansing’s John Smoltz Struggles At U.S. Senior Open
Baseball Hall of Famer, and Lansing Waverly's own, John Smoltz (pictured) shot a 15 over par 85 in the first round of the 39th U.S. Senior Open at The Broadmoor in Colorado on Thursday.
Smoltz, who's 51, struggled all day on The Broadmoor's East Course. He bogeyed 12 holes on the day as well as triple bogey 7 on the 15th hole (Smoltz's sixth hole of the day).
The former Atlanta Brave great tees off on Friday afternoon in the second round at 12:51 Colorado time (2:51 Lansing time).
Smoltz qualified for the Senior Open by taking one of three spots from the Peachtree City, Georgia sectional qualifier back on May 31st.
Former U.S. Open runner-up Rocco Mediate (finished 2nd to Tiger Woods in 2008) is among the early leaders in Round 1.
