The Traverse City Pit Spitters, a member of the independent Northwoods League (A college wood bat summer league), will play for the league championship after defeating the Madison (WI) Mallards 6-2 at home (Turtle Creek Stadium, to be more specific) on Wednesday night in the one-game league semifinals.

Traverse City got a complete game six-hitter from Wittenberg University's Joe Horoszko to lead the Spitters to Friday's title game at the St. Cloud (MN) Rox.

Trey Yunger and Zeb Roos (both from Wofford College) each had two hits for Traverse City in addition to the splendid pitching performance by Horoszko.

The Pit Spitters qualified for the Northwoods League playoffs by winning the first half title in the Great Lakes East Division.  They finished second behind the Kokomo (IL) Jackrabbits in the second half.  They won the first-round playoff series over the Jackrabbits 2 games to 1.

This is the third season for Traverse City in the Northwoods League. They won the league title in 2019.

In one way or another, these players have had a special impact on me because of the way they played the great game of baseball.
