Different cultures celebrate different holidays.

Since the world is multicultural, you would think that every holiday would be celebrated in the same capacity.

However, there are 4 new school holidays that I think Michigan schools should implement.

What 4 New School Holidays Should Michigan Schools Add?

In the Williamsville School District in New York, there are 4 new holidays that kids will be able to get off for.

Starting in September of 2024, the kids and teachers will have these 4 holidays off from school.

National Geographic Kids shared that,

"Diwali, or Dipawali, is India's biggest and most important holiday of the year. The festival gets its name from the row (avali) of clay lamps (deepa) that Indians light outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects from spiritual darkness. This festival is as important to Hindus as the Christmas holiday is to Christians."

  • Asian Lunar New Year

The National Museum Of Asian Art say,

"Commonly known as the Spring Festival in China, Lunar New Year is a fifteen-day celebration marked by many traditions. At home, families decorate windows with red paper cuttings and adorn doors with couplets expressing auspicious wishes for the new year. Shopping for holiday sundries in open-air markets and cleaning the house are also beloved traditions."

  • Eid al-Fitr - April

Brandeis University says that

"Eid al-Fitr is one of two major holidays celebrated by Muslims and commemorates the end of the holy month of Ramadan, in which Muslims fast daily from before dawn until sunset. It is commemorated by a large, community-wide prayer service in the morning, followed by meals and conversation with friends and family"

  • Edi al-Adh - mid-June

These school holidays will be deemed as "superintendent conference days."

With all of the positive feedback that is happening from this announcement, I am wondering whether Michigan should adopt these holidays as well.

As of now, Michigan students and teachers get the typical holidays off.

  • New Year Day
  • Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day
  • Spring Break
  • Memorial Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving
  • Christmas

Do you think these holidays should be added?
