Authorities outsmarted a 21-year-old Tennessee man after he attempted to enroll in school in Northern Michigan in an attempt to prey on a student.

Predators Go to Many Lengths to Find Victims

Police in Mason County say 21-year-old Kevin Flick flew from Fort Campbell, Tennessee to Grand Rapids, then drove north to enroll at Mason County Central High School. Mason County is about halfway between Traverse City and Grand Rapids on the shore of Lake Michigan.

Flick was attempting to pursue a relationship with an underage girl he had met online.

To Catch a Predator

School officials say Flick attempted to enroll with a fake name, saying he was 17. They became suspicious when he said that he didn't have any identification.

Kim Cole is the Maon County Sheriff. He encourages parents to keep a close eye on the people their kids are chatting with online.

“Although I wished this series of events never unfolded, I couldn’t be more proud of the MCC employees, Deputy Postma, and our detectives,” Sheriff Cole tells 9 & 10 News. “I would strongly encourage parents to have conversations with their children about the dangers of online chatting and the sharing of information over the internet or social media platforms.”

Tennessee Man Faces Many Charges

Police say Flick faces several charges, including Possession of Child Sexually Abusive Material, Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor, and Furnishing False Information to a Law Enforcement Officer.
