Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman announced on Thursday that fifth-year head coach Jeff Blashill (pictured) would return for the 2020-21 season.

After leading the Wings to the Stanley Cup playoffs in his first year in 2016, the team has missed the postseason the last four seasons.  That includes the 17-49-5 season in 2019-20.

Blashill, who's 46 years old, has one year left on his contract.  He has coached in college as well as in the Red Wings organization with the Grand Rapids Griffins.

The Wings 2019-20 season is finished, as the NHL has decided to abandon the rest of the regular season and go to a 24-team playoff format to complete the season.
