Cassius Winston Named to Bob Cousy Award Shortlist

Miles Bridges and Jaren Jackson Jr. are pulling down accolades weekly with their play this season, however on Monday it was the Spartans’ point guard who was named to a national award shortlist.

The Bob Cousy award, given to college basketball’s point guard of the year, cut 10 candidates from their original list of 20 from the start the season, and Michigan State’s Cassius Winston made the cut.

In March, this list of 10 will be halved again down to five and the winner will be honored at ESPN’s College Basketball Awards in early April.

Winston is joined by notable names like Oklahoma’s Trae Young, UNC’s Joel Berry II, and Villanova’s Jalen Brunson as the 10 candidates remaining in contention.

So far this season Winston is second in the country with a 53% 3-point percentage and is in the top 10 nationally with 7.0 assists per game. Both of those numbers are tops in the Big Ten conference. Winston was also named MVP of the Victory bracket in the PK80 tournament earlier this season, which Michigan State won.

Since the award was started in 2004, no Michigan State point guard has won this honor. Notable previous winners of the Bob Cousy award include Frank Mason III (2017), Shabazz Napier (2014), Trey Burke (2013), Kemba Walker (2011), and Dee Brown (2006).
