TSN out of Canada is reporting that the Detroit Red Wings are in the process of sending defenseman Brendan Smith to the New York Rangers for a pair of draft choices in the 2017 Entry Draft.

Smith can become an unrestricted free agent after this season.  The 28-year old veteran and the Red Wings had been talking about a contract extension, according to reports.  But apparently, the team has decided to move on.

The Wings, you may remember, traded forward Tomas Jurco to the Chicago Blackhawks last week.  And the team gave defenseman Nick Jensen a two-year extension yesterday.
