Your Five Things For October 22nd: The World Series Is Underway
1. Kansas City Falls To San Francisco In Game One
In game one of the World Series, the San Francisco Giants traveled to Kansas City to take on the Royals. The Giants jumped out to an early lead and never looked back winning 7-1. The Kansas City Royals starter James Shields got pulled after 3 innings giving up 5 runs, 7 hits and 1 strikeout. Madison Bumgarner pitched 7 innings giving up only 1 run on 3 hits with 5 strikeouts earning the win. The Royals only got 4 hits throughout the game as the offense struggled most of the game. For the Giants, 8/9 starters got a hit. Game 2 is tonight with first pitch at 8:00 pm.
2. Red Wings Lose But Still Get a Point
Last night in Montreal, the Detroit Red Wings fell to the Montreal Canadians in overtime 2-1. The Red Wings held a late 1 goal lead and with under 5 minutes left and Alex Galchenyuk scored to tie the game. Less than a minute into the overtime period, the Canadians got the game winning goal by David Desharnais. The lone Red Wing goal was scored by Henrik Zetterberg. Pavel Datsyuk did play in his first game of the year getting an assist and a goal, which was later disallowed due to contact. The Red Wings next game will be at home on Thursday against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
3. Oscar Pistorious Begins Jail Sentence
In South Africa, Oscar Pistorius was sentenced to 5 years in jail with a possibility to get out after 10 months and be on house arrest. He was only charged for culpable homicide. Read more about the sentencing and trial coverage here.
4. NCAA Says Accusations Unfounded Against Oklahoma State
In 2013, Sports Illustrated uncovered a story on Oklahoma State about both the football and basketball team which could have resulted in serious penalties. 5. Cowboys Cut Michael Sam
Former SEC Defensive player of the year, Michael Sam, has been cut from the Cowboys practice squad. Sam, who was originally drafted by the Rams was cut from the roster at the end of the preseason. He was signed to the practice squad by Dallas and has been there ever since. Read all of Sam's comments here.
