Darren Helm scored two goals as the Detroit Red Wings closed out 2014 with a 3-1 win over the New Jersey Devils New Year's Eve at Joe Louis Arena. After a scoreless first period, New Jersey (13-19-7) struck first on Joe Whitney's first career NHL goal with 4:23 left in the period. Detroit (20-9-9) then tied the game two minutes later on Helm's first goal past Devils goalie Cory Schneider. The Wings took the lead with five minutes to go in regulation on a Henrik Zetterberg re-direction, then capped off the scoring 35 seconds later with Helm's second score. Schneider stopped 25 of 28 shots while his Red Wing counterpart, Jimmy Howard, made 12 saves of his own. Detroit takes the ice for the first time in 2015 Saturday night in Vancouver to start a six game road trip. Pregame coverage begins at 9:40pm on Lansing's Big Talker 1240 WJIM.
