What’s the Greatest Shortstop and Second Baseman Combo of All Time?
If you’re a crazy baseball fan, this topic always comes up. Who is the greatest double play combo of all time? In my books, hands down it is the Detroit Tigers Alan Trammell and Lou Whitaker. Of course, Trammell is in the Baseball Hall of Fame and Lou Whitaker should be.
Those two Tigers players were a double play combo for 19 years. Trammell had a lifetime .285 batting average and 2,365 hits. He was a 6x All-Star, World Series champion, World Series MVP, 4x Gold Glove Award and the Detroit Tigers retired his number 3 too.
Lou Whitaker should be in the Baseball Hall of Fame. He has a lifetime batting average .276, 2,369 hits. He was a 5x All-Star, World Series champion, AL Rookie of the Year, 3x Gold Glove Winner and a 4x Silver Slugger Award.
Both these men should be regarded as the best double play combination ever. They accumulated a combined 146.8 War. This is the top for all combos in the history of Major League Baseball. Both Trammell and Whitaker played their entire careers in Motown with the Tigers.
When it comes to the greatest shortstop and second baseman combo of all time, there is no doubt Trammell and Whitaker are the tops.
