Justin Verlander pitched 8 strong innings, and the Detroit Tigers took advantage of an error by Tampa Bay shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera.  Those two events led to the Tigers 2-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Rays starting pitcher Chris Archer retired the first 19 batters he faced before giving up an infield single to Jose Iglesias in the 7th inning.   Yoenis Cespedes then hit a routine grounder to shortstop that Cabrera bobbled, then hits by JD Martinez and Nick Castellanos gave Detroit the lead for good.

Joakim Soria pitched the 9th inning for his 23rd save of the season.  The Tigers open a four-game series in Baltimore on Thursday night.  You'll hear it on Lansing's Big Talker 1240 WJIM beginning at 6:40.
