Times Sure are Different in the Sports World Today
I am 61 years old. I had a great childhood, and sports have always been a part of my life. Even at an early age, I started collecting baseball and football cards. I trained myself to memorize the facts of the ballplayers on the back of the cards. It was a game that I did by myself, and it really became a part of my life and routine.
What I’m getting at is that growing up, professional athletes made a good living. But today’s professional athletes and head coaches make millions and millions of dollars. Which is great for them but not for the average blue collar family that can’t even afford tickets to the games because the cost is so high.
When I was growing up, a lot of the kids I ran with knew all the ballplayer's names. But today I think kids just try to get to the top without paying any dues. Meaning today's athletes don’t know the history of their chosen sport and really don’t care.
Sports is just different today. Winning is everything.
Listen, I’m a super competitive person, but I do draw the line. Some parents have ruined the fun of the sports. They have made it where great youth and high school coaches quit because of the interference of selfish parents. I could go on and on about this topic.
That’s what I’m talking about with sports. They sure have changed. It’s all about money now!
