Max Scherzer struck out 14 as the Detroit Tigers gained a split in their four game interleague series with the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 5-2 win at Comerica Park Thursday afternoon.  J.D Martinez had two RBI for Detroit (65-54) including a solo home run in the fifth inning to start the scoring, then drew a bases loaded walk in the sixth as well as an RBI single in the eighth that scored Miguel Cabrera on a throwing error by Michael Martinez and he   Nick Castellanos also added a pair of RBI in the eighth with his two run single that capped the scoring for the Tigers. Pittsburgh (64-57) avoided the shutout thanks to a late homer from Gaby Sanchez. Scherzer (14-4) worked 8 shoutout innings only giving up three hits for the win while Francisco Liriano (3-9) took the loss. Detroit will welcome former Tiger Austin Jackson back as they begin a weekend series against Seattle Friday night.  Rick Porcello (13-7) starts for Detroit while James Paxton (2-0) throws for the Mariners.
