The NLCS begins on Saturday, San Francisco faces St. Louis. So I have to talk about one of the all-time greats--his name is Willie Mays.

Mays will always be regarded as one of the greatest players ever in MLB. He was born in Fairfield, Alabama. This is his story in a thumb-nail sketch.

Willie Mays was known as the "Say Hey Kid." He signed his first pro contract with the Birmingham Barons. From there he went on to stardom with the New York Giants, then they moved the franchise to San Francisco.

The reason I chose to write about Mays is because the youth of this great country should know who this man is.

In his rookie year, the Giants made a late-season rush to wrest the pennant from the Brooklyn Dodgers. That winter he was called into the Army. In 1954 he returned and won the MVP Award, hitting 41 homers and leading the league with a batting average of .345.

This man also made one of the greatest catches of all-time. During the 1954 World Series, running straight toward the outfield wall, Willie reaches up to nab Vic Wertz's drive. One of the most clutch electrifying catches ever in MLB history.

Willie Mays,The "Say Hey Kid," will always be remembered as a fierce competitor that always hustled and played hard. He is also Barry Bonds' godfather. Throw all of his stats against all of the all-time greats and he measures up to all of them.
