Patrick Mahomes Was Once Drafted By The Detroit Tigers [Video]
Patrick Mahomes was not only a great high school quarterback, but he was also a pretty good baseball pitcher.
So good, in fact, that the Detroit Tigers drafted Mahomes in the 37th round of the 2014 baseball draft. The lateness of the pick indicated the Tigers knew he was committed to play football in college at Texas Tech, but felt strong enough about his talent to secure his rights in case he changed his mind.
He didn't. And it's clear from his first three seasons, Mahomes is doing okay in the world of football, leading his Kansas City Chiefs to their first Big Game in 50 years.
Mahomes' dad, also named Patrick, was a reliever for a few seasons in the Major Leagues, racking up a 42-39 record for an assortment of teams, including the Chicago Cubs.
"He was very up-front about football. That pushed him down the board," Tim Grieve, the Tigers' area scout who watched him told MLB.com. "He was one of the better athletes I've covered in East Texas in my 15 years."
Grieve said Mahomes could've probably thrown a 94-95 mph fastball if he had concentrated on just that sport.
Here's his highlight video from Whitehouse High School in Texas.
