Michigan State avoided a historically dubious 0-6 Big Ten start with a 63-56 win over Illinois Thursday night at Breslin Center. Michigan State (9-8, 1-5 Big Ten) snapped a five game losing streak by running out to a 15-3 lead to open the game and eventually stretched that lead to 19. The Fighting Illini (11-6, 2-3) however, opened the second half on an 11-0 run and eventually closed within six points but could get no closer as Michigan State made free throws down the stretch to seal the win. Michigan State had three players register double doubles led by Aerial Powers who scored 33 points and 11 rebounds, Becca Mills added 13 points and 12 boards while Tori Jankoska also pulled down 12 rebounds to go with her 11 points. Illinois was led by Brittany Carter who scored 19. Michigan State takes the court again Sunday afternoon as they will host the #22 ranked Iowa Hawkeyes at Breslin Center. Pregame coverage begins at 2:45 pm on Lansing's Big Talker 1240 WJIM.
