The MSU Spartans beat the UMASS Minutemen at Munn Ice Arena for the first game of MSU hockey tonight, 5-3. The Spartans didn't waste time getting things started, with Matt Berry scoring a goal 3 minutes after the 1st period started. J.T. Stenglein scored another goal for MSU with 2 and a half minutes left in the 1st, giving MSU a 2-0 lead. UMASS struck back in the 2nd when Keith Burchett scored a goal, Brennan Baxandall and Shane Walsh on the assist. They Tied it all up minutes later when Zach Larue scored a goal for the Minutemen. But you can't keep a good Spartan down when late in the 2nd, Mackenzie Maceachren, broke the tie. The Spartans wern't done yet, in the 3rd, Matt Deblouw added another goal to the lead, and Matt Berry scored his second goal of the night, giving MSU a 5-2 lead. Burchett got in a goal to bring them within 2. But it wasn't enough to keep MSU at bay.
