For the first time ever, the Michigan State men's basketball team is ranked number 1 in the first Associated Press college basketball poll, released on Monday.

This is the first time in school history that MSU, under 25th year head coach Tom Izzo (pictured), has been ranked number 1 at the start of the season.

The Spartans' first opponent, Kentucky, is ranked number 2 with Kansas, Duke, and Louisville rounding out the top five.

Maryland is the next highest rated Big Ten team at number 7.  Ohio State is ranked 17th, and Purdue is slotted at 23rd.  Illinois and Michigan are in the Receiving Votes category.
