Michigan State football opens their 2024 season on August 30th at Spartan Stadium against Florida Atlantic.  And they open the Big Ten schedule the following Saturday (September 7th) against Maryland on the road.

Those are the definites that we know about MSU Football so far.  Oh yeah, there are a couple of others:

Who's the starting quarterback?  That's easy:  Sophomore transfer Aidan Chiles.  Next...

Who's the starting running back?  It'll be redshirt junior Nathan Carter.  What about other positions?

Starting wide receiver Montorie Foster, Jr. (fifth-year senior) is injured.  But it isn't expected to be serious.

Kicker Jonathan Kim is back for his final year.  And so is middle linebacker Cal Haladay.

But there's a lot we don't know about MSU Football...

And that's because MSU has at least 45 new players on this year's roster.  And that includes Chiles.  45!!!!

You always have 1/5th-1/4 of your roster turn over every year due to graduation or transfer.  But 45 new players is nearly HALF the 100+ player roster.  Maybe that will be the norm going forward with NIL and the transfer portal.  But when I saw that number, it was alarming.

And because of that, there are questions marks everywhere else,  Is the defense going to stop anybody?  Is the offensive line going to block anybody?  Those stick out, obviously.

I agree with those (including Tim Staudt) that feel that the Maryland game in Week 2 is key.  Assuming State wins the Florida Atlantic game in Week 1, they could start the season at 3-0 (they'll beat Prairie View A & M in Week 3) before taking on Boston College on the road on September 21st.  That would be big, confidence-wise.
