Smith was injured on a play where he was trying to defend Patriot's tight end, while the contact itself did not seem very drastic, the results were frightening as Smith was immobilized on a backboard.

It was Smith's first start as a Lion after joining their practice squad in August.

Smith went undrafted in 2019 after transferring to Alabama for his senior season.

He was picked up by the Jacksonville Jaguars but was unable to make the roster, he then spent time with the Houston Roughnecks of the XFL before stints with the Dallas Cowboys, Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos, and San Francisco before eventually landing with the Lions.

Smith was taken to a hospital in Foxborough where it was confirmed that he had movement in his extremities.
