The Saranac junior high football player who collapsed and passed away on Wednesday has been identified.

The 13-year-old 7th grader was identified as Skylar Lasby. Lasby reportedly collapsed during a non-contact drill during practice on Wednesday. He was helicoptered to a Grand Rapids hospital where he passed away.

According to MLive, Superintendent Jason Smith wrote in a statement: “With a heavy heart Saranac Community Schools is mourning the loss of one of our very own 7th graders. … Supports are available at the school from local counseling agencies and school districts. Supports will be in place district-wide for as long as needed.”
