When Ron Mason retired from the bench of Michigan State hockey, he boasted the most wins in college hockey history. He won more than 900 games, captured a national championship and put many players into the NHL.

But he was more than just a hockey coach.

His contemporaries as well as former players and journalists who covered him remember him as an ambassador for college hockey at large. They also remember him for his inextinguishable spirit, the enthusiasm with which he approached everything.

And don't forget the man loved to fish.

Mason died early Monday from a heart attack, his family announced. The news came as a shock to most, since the 76-year-old Mason was livelier than most half his age.
