Legendary Michigan State hockey coach and former MSU Athletic Director Ron Mason has died at the age of 76.

Mason passed away from a heart attack early Monday morning, his family announced.

Mason coached the Spartans for 23 seasons, leading State to the National Championship in 1986.  He previously coached Bowling Green and Lake Superior State before coming to East Lansing.

Coach Mason won 924 games during his coaching career, which is good for second-most all-time.  He left the coaching position in 2002 to become the school's athletic director.  He was the AD until January 1st, 2008.
