Report: U-M Football Defensive Star Mazi Smith Facing Felony Charge
Both the Detroit Free Press and Detroit News are reporting that University of Michigan senior defensive lineman Mazi Smith (pictured above, #58) is facing a felony concealed weapons charge, stemming from an early October incident in Ann Arbor.
If convicted, Smith faces up to five years in jail or a $2,500 fine. The alleged incident took place on October 7th, which was one day before Michigan played at Indiana.
Smith is a co-captain on Michigan's team, and he was voted to the first team All-Big Ten team earlier this week. He's been a key cog to Michigan's 12-0 season, including last Saturday's 45-23 victory over Ohio State.
The 2nd ranked Wolverines will play Purdue on Saturday night in the Big Ten Championship game at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
There was no comment from the Michigan football program or Mazi Smith's attorney, John Shea.
