The NFL Network is reporting that the Detroit Lions have signed their top draft choice, offensive lineman Penei Sewell (pictured, #58 with Oregon teammate Justin Herbert) to a fully guaranteed 4-year, $24 million contract (also has a fifth-year team option).

Sewell was taken with the 7th overall selection in the recent NFL Draft.  He did not play in 2020 for the University of Oregon because of concerns over COVID-19.  And he actually missed the recent rookie camp due to contracting COVID-19.  He now joins Taylor Decker, Frank Ragnow, Jonah Jackson, and others on an improving offensive line.

The Lions have given contract extensions to the aforementioned Decker and Ragnow in the last two years.  And also a big free-agent deal to Halapoulivaati Vaitai (who was beset by ineffectiveness and injuries in 2020).

Sewell joins fellow draft choices Alim McNeil and Jermar Jefferson as draft choices who are signed and are ready to go to training camp in July.
