Portland Upsets DeWitt In H.S. Football Upset
Well, as "Rowdy" Roddy Piper used to say: "Just when they think they got the answers, I change the questions!!!"
The Portland Raiders football team is changing the questions after upsetting defending Division 3 state champion DeWitt 20-17 Thursday night at Portland High School.
Hayden Getchall's 10-yard touchdown pass to Ethan Patrick with 18 seconds left gave the Raiders the stunning victory.
The question now is: Is Portland all of a sudden the best team in the Mid-Michigan area? Which nobody (well, almost nobody) thought before the season.
The Raiders are a terrific program under veteran head coach John Novara. They have won a state title (2012) and have been finalists (2018) in Division 5.
Last year they were a team that was very young and inexperienced but ended up as CAAC White champs and DIvision 5 district champs. And if it hadn't had issues with COVID-19, they might have ended up at Ford Field once again.
Now they have experience, and this win on Thursday puts them at the forefront of Division 5 for the rest of the season.
In fact, with this win, their Week 6 game at Lansing Catholic MIGHT BE the game of the year in the area (Catholic is 2-0 after beating Williamston on Thursday). We'll have to wait and see.
But the Raiders have the upset of the year so far in this young season. And myself, and pretty much the rest of the media, were horribly wrong about DeWitt @ Portland. If the boys out in Portland used us betting against them as motivation, good for them!
Portland is no joke, that's for sure. They never are. Week 6 at Lansing Catholic looks to be another great one!
