Detroit Tigers pitcher, Matthew Boyd had a breakout year and was named the Tigers player of the year for 2019.

According to Bless You Boys, Boyd was named as the player of the year by the Detroit Chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America.

Boyd received 15 of the 22 first place votes.   Tigers Designated Hitter, Miguel Cabrera was second with 3 votes.

Matthew posted a team leading 3.5 rWAR, and set a Tigers record with averaging 11.56 strikeouts per nine innings.

Home runs allowed hurt him this season as he led the league with 39 which raised his ERA to 4.56.

He was clearly the best pitcher for the team this season and should be one of the anchors of the starting rotation next season.

Spring Training for the Detroit Tigers will begin in February with the first Spring game February 22nd in Lakeland, Florida against the Phillies.
