Had Gunthorpe won, he would've been the second Michigan native to win a major Amateur title in recent weeks. Michigan State senior James Piot won the U.S. Amateur last month with a 2 & 1 victory over Austin Greaser in the finals at Oakmont CC in Pennsylvania.
