Jerry is a long time amateur player in the state of Michigan.  He has played in countless Amateur and Open tournaments over many years.

Had Gunthorpe won, he would've been the second Michigan native to win a major Amateur title in recent weeks.  Michigan State senior James Piot won the U.S. Amateur last month with a 2 & 1 victory over Austin Greaser in the finals at Oakmont CC in Pennsylvania.
