Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore has long been a destination for Michiganders and tourists for as long as I can remember. The park is located in Alger County, Michigan, and is well known for its natural beauty. The big draw to the park is the multicolored Pictured Rocks cliffs but also the sandstone formations like Miners Castle and Chapel Rock. Plus there are tons of shipwrecks that are near the shoreline of Lake Superior.

History of Pictured Rocks

Pictured Rocks earned its name from the 15 miles of mineral-stained, sandstone cliffs. The park is the first national lakeshore in the country and was established in 1966. You can see amazing rust colors where groundwater seeps through the cracks and runs down the rocks. The rocks were so eye-catching they were quarried in the late 1800s to make buildings.

The breakdown of the colors is red which represents iron, green and pink represent copper, yellow and brown represents limonite, and black and white represent manganese.
