Michigan State football announced on Thursday that the team will wear helmets featuring the Block "S" design on it for this Saturday's tilt with Indiana at Spartan Stadium.

This is a tribute to former MSU Head Coach George Perles, who passed away this past January at the age of 85.

Coach Perles loved the Block "S' design on the helmets.  He felt that it represented "the Spartan family" and unity within the football and athletic program.  Perles coached the Spartans from 1983-1994, leading them to a 9-2-1 record, the outright Big Ten championship, and a Rose Bowl victory over Southern Californa 20-17 in the 1987 season.

Perles also coached the team to a share of the Big Ten title in 1990 (sharing with Michigan, Iowa, and Illinois).  He was also the school's athletic director at one point and later served on the school's Board of Trustees.

MSU hosts Indiana this Saturday for the Old Brass Spittoon.  You can hear it on WJIM-AM and WMMQ starting with the White Law Tailgate Show, beginning at 8:30am.
