Michigan State Suspends Eron Harris Following Drunk Driving Arrest

A player Michigan State is counting on having a big impact next season could miss time following an off-the-court issue.

Eron Harris was arrested in the early morning hours of July 1 for allegedly driving drunk, just hours after playing in the opening night of the Moneyball basketball tournament in Dimondale, the Lansing State Journal reports. The 21-year-old guard was charged with misdemeanor operating a vehicle while intoxicated and refusing a preliminary breath test.

Harris has been suspended indefinitely, MSU basketball coach Tom Izzo told the State Journal.

"We hold our student-athletes to high standards, and the decisions that Eron made were irresponsible and unacceptable," Izzo said in a statement. "Actions have consequences, and Eron must face those consequences in the legal system, in the court of public opinion, and within the program. Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken as the legal system runs its course."

Harris could face up to 93 days in jail and a $500 fine. He will be formally arraigned on charges on July 17.

Harris, 6-foot-3 and from Indianapolis, sat out last season per NCAA rules after transferring from West Virginia. As a sophomore, Harris averaged 17.2 points and 3.5 rebounds per game for the Mountaineers.
