Various media sources are reporting that Michigan State football has received a verbal commitment from wide receiver Antonio Gates, Jr., an incoming senior at Dearborn Fordson HS (MI).

Gates made those reports official on Monday morning:

Gates is the 16th verbal commitment for MSU head coach Mel Tucker (pictured above).

Antonio is rated as a four-star recruit, and is listed at 6-1, and 185 pounds.  In addition to being a wide receiver, he played defensive back for Fordson in 2020.

Gates, Jr. is the son of legendary San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers tight end Antonio Gates, Sr..  Gates, Sr. never played college football, but played college basketball at Kent State University (where he led the Golden Flashes to an Elite Eight berth in 2002).

Like all the 2022 football recruits, Gates, Jr. can sign with the Spartans in December (during the early signing period), or in February (the late signing period).
