Michigan State and BYU will clash in football for the first time ever.

The two schools on Wednesday announced a home-and-home series beginning in 2016 in East Lansing, followed by a 2020 meeting in Provo, Utah.

It's the latest in a line of home-and-home series MSU has procured since 2010: Arizona State (2018-19), Miami-Fla. (2020-21) and Boise State (2022-23), as well as the extension of its series with Notre Dame (2016-17, 2023, 2026-27).

Michigan State Athletics Director Mark Hollis announced Wednesday, Jan. 21 that the Spartans have signed a contract for a home-and-home football series with BYU. The Spartans will kick off the two-game series with their first-ever meeting against BYU on Oct. 8, 2016, in East Lansing, Michigan, and make their first-ever appearance in the 63,470-seat LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, Utah, on Sept. 12, 2020.

Michigan State will open the 2016 schedule against Furman on Sept. 3 in Spartan Stadium. Following a bye week, the Spartans will travel to Notre Dame on Sept. 17.

The 2016 season also marks the Big Ten’s return to a nine-game conference schedule for the first time since 1982-84. Michigan State will open Big Ten play against Wisconsin on Sept. 24 in Spartan Stadium and travel to Indiana on Oct. 1 before concluding its non-conference schedule against BYU on Oct. 8.

Since 2010, Michigan State has announced home-and-home series with BYU (2016, 2020), Arizona State (2018-19), Miami-Fla. (2020-21) and Boise State (2022-23) as well as the extension of its series with Notre Dame (2016-17, 2023, 2026-27).

“We continue to be aggressive and innovative in our approach to non-conference scheduling, as we seek to bring the top programs in college football to our state as well as provide our student-athletes with an opportunity to compete nationally at the highest level,” Hollis said. “The BYU series also provides MSU Alums in the Rockies and West with an opportunity to see the Spartans play against a national program.”

Michigan State, which capped off an 11-2 season with a dramatic comeback win over No. 5 Baylor in the 2015 Cotton Bowl Classic, ranked No. 5 in the final Associated Press and USA TODAY/Amway Coaches Polls. The Spartans finished among the nation’s Top 10 for the second year in a row (No. 3 in both polls in 2013) – a program first since 1965-66.

Michigan State, which has posted a 24-3 record since 2013, is the only school in the nation to win a Bowl Championship Series game during the 2013 season (24-20 over Stanford in 2014 Rose Bowl Game) and a New Year’s Six bowl game (42-41 over Baylor in the Cotton Bowl Classic) this season.
