Michigan Gas Prices are Falling! A True Surprise! What Happened?
Is this a mirage or am I really seeing gas prices in and around Grand Rapids falling?
Not mirage at all because prices are finally falling and just in time for springtime driving.
AAA says around Michigan the average price for a gallon of gas is $3.62, 9 cents lower than last week. However, around here, West Michigan, you can find even lower prices, but only in some spots. The lowest price I've been able to find is at Costco for $3.48 a gallon on 28th Street, SE, but even lower, $3.24 at the Grandville Costco.
In metro Detroit, the current gas average is $3.60 per gallon, but again, you can find it lower to much lower in select locations. For sure, it's not worth the drive, however, you can find it for as low as $3.05 on Joy Road in Detroit. Holy Cow!
Where is the most expensive gas in Michigan? Up north is the answer, in Traverse City with an average price of $3.72.
So what is going on? The price of crude oil has declined just as the crude oil stocks have increased. And ironically, demand for gasoline has declined a bit as well, so it's been a help in pushing prices down.
Yes, we are still paying 21 cents more than it was this time last month, but down around 31 cents from this time last year. To bring that into perspective, last year at this time we were paying an average of $3.91 for a gallon of gas here in Michigan. As of now, we're only paying $54 for a full 15-gallon tank of gasoline.
Now, don't you feel better?
