MHSAA Adds Two Sports; Adjusts Winter Schedule
The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Representative Council announced on Thursday afternoon the addition of two sports as well as making changes to the winter sports season schedule.
Effective in the 2025-26 school year, the MHSAA will add girls field hockey to the fall season in 2025. And then in the following spring, boys volleyball will be played at the varsity level.
In addition to those changes, the MHSAA voted to move the end of the winter sports season up by one week. That change will also take effect in the 2025-26 school year.
The Representative Council voted on these changes at their annual spring meetings in Gaylord earlier this month.
Other changes that were voted on that will take effect next school year are: Team championships for girls wrestling, seeding for the entire district tournaments for soccer and basketball (boys and girls), and a capping of 250 enrolled students for schools that play 11-Player football at the Division 8 level.
The additions of boys volleyball and girls field hockey are the first additions to the roster of sports that the MHSAA sponsors since the 2004-05 school year, that was when boys and girls lacrosse were added to the spring slate.
The current MHSAA sports season enters their spring tournaments in the next week or so with boys and girls lacrosse regionals, track and field regionals, and girls tennis regionals.
This year's high school sports season will conclude, once again, with the baseball, softball, and girls soccer finals being played the weekend of June 13-15 at the Pentecost Plaza at Michigan State University.
