Just where is Mackinac Island actually located in Michigan?

When it comes to unique land features, Michigan is at the top of the list in the country. Not only is the state split into the upper and lower peninsula, but many islands are also located in the state, most famously, Mackinac Island.

So what is Mackinac Island considered to be a part of? The upper peninsula or lower peninsula? Neither? Both? There are so many ways to look at and answer that question. However, technically, Mackinac Island is in Mackinac County, which is located in the Upper Peninsula.

The next time you are with a group of friends, ask them which peninsula Mackinac Island is located and you will for the most part see an interesting response. Every person I have asked this question to today has responded in the same way. When asked, they begin to answer quickly and then stop almost immediately to ponder their response. It's fun to watch their thoughts fight themselves when thinking of an answer.

So far, the answers I have received around the office are split pretty evenly between the upper and lower peninsulas. A few people have even said that Mackinac Island doesn't belong to either peninsula but is a land mass on its own. What do you think? Personally, I have always thought any that doesn't touch the northern end of the lower peninsula was considered the U.P., but that is just me.

Fun fact: Mackinac Island is home to one of the longest-operating golf clubs in Michigan, which is Wawashkamo Golf Club.
