Lansing-Area High School Football Power Rankings: Week 5
Portland was most impressive on Friday night, blowing out Division 5 No. 1 Lansing Catholic 28-6. So was Lakewood, winning on the road 61-42 at Stockbridge with two kids rushing for more than 200 yards.
St. Johns, Grand Ledge, Fowlerville, and P-W got big wins as well. There are 8 undefeated teams in the area right now. Seven of them make this week's rankings.
But I lead off with...
- 1
Portland (4-0, 2-0)
Last Week: No. 4An awesome performance by the Red Raiders over Lansing Catholic puts them at the top of the list this week. Their defense forced 4 Tony Poljan interceptions.
They host Ionia this week. But Williamston awaits in Week 7.
- 2
Grand Ledge (4-0, 2-0)
Last Week: No. 1Easy victory over Okemos 43-7. Dropping them isn't a punishment. It's simply rewarding Portland for winning the biggest game of the year so far.
- 3
DeWitt (4-0, 2-0)
Last Week: No. 3Very good home win over Mason, QB Will Nagle is getting better and the running backs look tough. Visiting Haslett in Week 6 won't be easy.
- 4
Lakewood (4-0, 2-0)
Last Week: No. 7Terrific 61-42 win at Stockbridge on Friday. They can take the GLAC lead if they beat Olivet in the Vikings biggest home game in years.
- 5
Pewamo-Westphalia (4-0, 3-0)
Last Week: No. 8Crushed Dansville on the road 64-7. They host Fulton on Friday. The traditional showdown with Fowler is in Week 8.
- 7
St. Johns (3-1, 2-0)
Last Week: No. 10Hung on to beat Haslett 34-32. Still have to play DeWitt in Week 7. That game is at DeWitt.
- 8
Fowler (4-0, 3-0)
Last Week: UnrankedStill have Dansville on the slate before the Week 8 showdown with P-W. The Eagles look strong right now.
- 9
Ithaca (4-0, 3-0)
Last Week: UnrankedOnly Saginaw Mich. Lutheran Seminary can stop them from another 9-0 season. Unchallenged so far.
- 10
Haslett (3-1, 1-1)
Last Week: No. 5Nearly came back from 17 points down against St. Johns on the road. They can move back into the top five if they win at Mason and home against DeWitt the next two weeks.
