With temperatures expected to climb well into the 90's by this weekend, heat indices are also expected to increase, possibly into triple digits.

Area officials, businesses and services are taking notice. According to WILX.com, cooling centers across Mid-Michigan are set to open up Thursday through Saturday. They are available for any area resident who is struggling to beat the heat. Elderly folks and those with chronic health conditions may need to take extra precautions, especially if air conditioning is not available.

CATA, Clinton Area Transit, and EATRAN are providing free rides for those who need to get to a cooling center, but can't afford to get there.

Most cooling centers do not allow pets, sadly. But, there are a number of places on the City of Lansing that will allow pet owners to bring the whole family, as long as those with fur are in a crate. The pet friendly cooling centers include Foster Community Center, Gier Community Center, Letts Community Center, Schmitt Community Center, and the Tri-County Office on Aging.

Residents can find a cooling center by dialing 211. The City of Lansing also has locations listed on its website. And, this link to WILX.com has a number of cooling centers listed all across the region.
