From sandcastles to beach volleyball, it is now the time to bask in the sun alongside Lake Michigan.

However, with all of that fun comes some dangers, too.

We all know about the dangers of water. But do you know how dangerous the sand is too?

Caution: No Digging!

The Weather Channel reported that a teenager from Virginia recently passed away because a nearby dune collapsed into the hole that he was digging and buried him.

Now, it has become a number one priority to remind beachgoers of the dangers of digging holes in the sand.

If you or your little ones plan to dig a few holes on the shores of Lake Michigan, it is suggested that you fill the holes back before you leave.

The Weather Channel says that,

safety officials say that no one should ever be in a hole deeper than the height of their own knees.

As the warmer weather becomes more consistent in Michigan, the lakeshore will be flooded with people.

So just remember to be as safe as possible.

But have fun! Happy Beach Day!

Ratings are based on six categories: affordability, weather, safety, economy, education and health, and quality of life. The cities ranged in population from 10,000 to 150,000, but they had to have at least one local beach listed on TripAdvisor. Read the full methodology here. From those rankings, we selected the top 50. Readers who live in California and Florida will be unsurprised to learn that many of towns featured here are in one of those two states.

Keep reading to see if your favorite beach town made the cut.
