Did Ya Hear the One About the Michigan City That’s Handing Out the Most Unusual Halloween Treats?
Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. Snickers bars. Kit Kat. These (and other pre-packaged treats) top our list of suggested items to hand out on Halloween this year, regardless of your city's Polish-American population.
There's a sweet story going around right now (pun intended) that residents in the city of Hamtramck, Michigan are busy preparing pierogi - those savory, delicious, stuffed dumplings - to hand out as Halloween treats.
It's a heartwarming little anecdote, but unfortunately, it's not true.
Don't worry if you saw it and fell for it, because you're not alone. A handful of my friends shared the news online, saying that they wish they lived closer to Hamtramck while some noted that it's generally unsafe to eat food that isn't pre-packaged and individually wrapped.

One of my colleagues was disappointed when I pointed out that it was satire, saying that she wanted it to be true simply because she loves pierogi so much.
How Did the Pierogi Rumor Get Started?
Although the post has spread like wildfire across Facebook, we've traced the original post back to a page known as the Wayne County Wire, billed as "Your #1 fake news source in Wayne County, Michigan.
"Though the tradition is rooted in Hamtramck’s strong Polish heritage, it has evolved into something everyone in the community enjoys, regardless of background. Neighbors share recipes, compete for the title of best pierogi on the block, and bond over the shared labor of making hundreds of dumplings in time for Halloween night."
We so wanted this to be true, because pierogi are delicious and the idea of handing out homemade stuffed dumplings is heartwarming. But mostly because pierogi are delicious.
