A popular convenience store with several Michigan locations is closing 444 stores across North America due to declining sales.

The earnings report released last week indicated that more than 400 7-Eleven stores will eventually be closing their doors.

What 7-Eleven Locations Are Slated to Close?

In Michigan, you'll find only a handful of stand-alone 7-Eleven locations. For the most part, 7-Eleven products are found inside Speedway gas stations across in Michigan. 7-Eleven swallowed up roughly 3,800 Speedway locations in 2021.

Earnings reports released last week did not specify which 7-Eleven locations would be closing, although the report did say that "underperforming stores" would be closed.

According to Fox 5, the convenience store chain has had six consecutive months of traffic decline, including a 7.3% decline in August of this year.

The report goes on to say that declining cigarette sales is a major factor in the chain's declining sales in the last five years. Cigarette sales have dropped about 26% since 2019 and 7-Eleven's parent company says the shift to other nicotine products hasn't been able to make up the difference.

The company said existing stores will likely be transformed to center around food, the chain's highest selling category.
