Mia Guzman is the Genesee County dispatcher who took the call at about 8:45 pm Friday. She and Dispatch Supervisor Adrienne Roberts helped Guide the caller through the process.
Ambulance Was Too Far Away
Dispatcher Guzman fielded the call from a mom whose daughter was in active labor. Guzman determined that since the woman was already experiencing contractions, any available ambulance would simply be too far away.
But Roberts tells ABC-12 that even though dispatchers receive training to help people through giving birth, they don't often have to rely on that training.
"It's fairly rare. There are people who go their whole careers without helping to deliver a child over the phone," she says. "I know I've been here almost 12 years and I've never had one."
She went on to praise Guzman for helping the local family and said that both the mother and newborn baby are doing fine.
Not One - But Two - Babies Delivered With the Help of 911 Operators
While it's not a common occurrence for a 911 dispatcher to assist with the delivery of a baby, this is the second time this week it's happened in Michigan.
On Valentine's Day (2/14) an Eaton County 911 dispatcher assisted with the birth of a baby girl over the phone. WLNS-TV reports that dispatcher Kayelee Cavender took the call from the woman's aunt who assisted with the birth.
Cavender tells the TV station she was very happy to help the family and said it was very exciting to be a part of it. This is actually the second she's assisted with a delivery, having been in a similar situation a few years ago as she was beginning her career as a 911 dispatcher.
