The man posing as a sergeant for the Fenton Police Department tells residents there is a warrant out for their arrest because they've missed jury duty.

Officers tell WNEM-TV that the man is very convincing, offering to take payment over the phone or to arrange a meeting at the Fenton Police Department or Genesee County Jail to accept payment.

Some residents say the calls have originated from (810) 215-0313 but warn that technology enables scammers to spoof numbers in an attempt to appear as if they're calling from a local phone number.

A spokesperson for the Fenton Police Department tells the TV station that officers will never contact residents over the phone regarding warrants. They won't as for payments over the phone and they won't meet up with residents for any sort of money exchange.

As always, never share personal information or bank account information or provide gift cards to anyone who solicits over the phone. It's also a good idea to make sure that vulnerable family members understand the risks regarding suspicious callers.
