Part 1: Cold Temperatures

Weather forecasters are in relative agreement that Michigan cities like Lansing, Grand Rapids, Flint and Kalamazoo will be plunged into a 2-week deep-freeze as we end the year, beginning this weekend.

According to AccuWeather.com, much of the eastern two-thirds of the nation will be in the grasp of a Siberian air mass before, during and even after Christmas.

This could be one of the most extreme air masses that is observed all winter across portions of the north-central U.S. - AccuWeather Meteorologist Brandon Buckingham

Temperatures are not expected to rise above freezing at all in most of Michigan between December 17 and December 31.

Part 2: The Precipitation

With temperatures that frigid, it's easy to predict that any precipitation that falls will not be rain.

No major snowstorms are currently predicted to affect Michigan during the impending cold snap, but anything that falls won't melt.

AccuWeather.com currently projects a few snow chances in the Lansing area beginning the middle of next week - potentially totaling 3 to 5 inches in the days leading up to Christmas.

Closer to Lake Michigan, Grand Rapids can expect a few flakes almost every day during the week before Christmas, with up to a half a foot of accumulation possible before Santa arrives.

Kalamazoo could see a pre-Christmas total of up to 8 to 10 inches, while areas around Flint are more likely to see slightly less than that.

The Bottom Line

If you like the idea of a white Christmas, Mother Nature appears to be setting the stage for you to get your wish in Michigan for 2022.
