The first significant snowstorm of the season is poised to bear down upon portions of Mid-Michigan Thursday through Saturday, and forecasters say some areas could see several inches of snow.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for much of southwestern Lower Michigan, including Ionia and Eaton Counties, from Thursday 11/17 at 7am to Saturday 11/19 at 7am. Areas closer to the Lake Michigan shore fell under the warnings on Wednesday night.

Counties along the immediate U.S. 127 corridor (including Jackson, Ingham, Clinton and Gratiot) are under Winter Weather Advisories for the same Thursday morning to Saturday morning time period.

An early-season lake effect snowstorm is predicted for towns near Lake Michigan, with as much as 14" in some areas. Further away from the lake, lower snowfall totals are expected.

As far as Mid-Michigan is concerned, forecasters with the government's National Weather Service and the privately-run AccuWeather are largely in agreement as far as how much snowfall can be expected over the next few days in various local communities. There are some exceptions, however.

For instance, while the National Weather Service is currently projecting snowfall totals around 10" for Ionia, AccuWeather plays that down - thinking more along the lines of 3-6" for the area. While NWS forecasters think accumulation in Jackson will be negligible, AccuWeather believes at least an inch or two can be expected.
