Someone recently overheard one of my semi-weekly "I wish we had a Sonic" mumblings and mentioned they'd never been.

"What's so great about Sonic?" they asked.

Where do I start?

Michigan has more than a dozen Sonic locations, but none of them are in the central part of the state. They're generally clustered around Detroit and Grand Rapids, with a few stragglers.

Drive-in to any one of them, and you'll enter a fast-food microcosm like none other. There's literally something for everyone on the Sonic menu, for whatever food mood you're in.

Want a double cheeseburger? Sonic's got you. Popcorn chicken? Yep. Generous portions of french fries and onion rings, foot-long coneys, tater tots, breakfast burritos - the list seems to have no end. No Sonic stop is complete without ordering something delicious from its dessert menu either (I'd recommend an Oreo Blast).

Don't even get me started on the drink options. What other fast food place do you know of that can serve up a full 44 oz. of your favorite customized beverage? My favorite's a cherry limeade, but with an ever-growing number of flavor add-ins, you can create soft drinks, slushes, teas and coffees that are 100% you.

Even Sonic's ice is superior to everything else out there.

The Perfect Place to Put a SONIC in Lansing

How a city the size of Lansing doesn't have a Sonic already is one of life's great mysteries.

If the powers-that-be are looking for the ideal place to put one, I've got a suggestion.

Sonic restaurants don't typically have indoor seating, so the size of their buildings doesn't take up much of a business lot. Their parking lots do, however, since it's a drive-in (often accompanied by a drive-thru).

I respectfully submit that the old Boston Market location on South Cedar Street in Lansing be torn down and replaced with a Sonic. It's right by I-96, and the population is there to support it.

It's the perfect location. And I'd be willing to bet that once Sonic gets started in Mid-Michigan, it'll expand beyond its first location in the area pretty quickly.

Non-Chain Lansing Restaurants That Are Open on Mondays

It wasn't so long ago that most restaurants were open seven days a week. Ever since COVID, a lot of places have taken to closing on Mondays - but not everyone. Here are 21 Lansing-area non-chain restaurants that are actually still open on Monday. (There are others that may not be included on this list.)
