An Ode to One of the Unofficial Official Foods of Lansing
Y'all... I have been missing out.
I have lived in Lansing for over 12 years now, and it wasn't until the other day that I finally tried one of the unofficial official foods of Lansing. And no, I'm not talking about the olive burger. To each their own... but ew.
No.
Lansing's Best Foods
Instead, this is an ode to another Lansing favorite at a beloved, long-lived Lansing establishment: The Hammy Sammy at Nip N Sip.
I'd like to kick things off with a bit of an apology. I never hated on the Hammy Sammy. However, I just figured, "it's just a ham sandwich". But boy, was I wrong.
Nip N Sip is a Lansing institution, having been around well over 50 years. And I have a feeling not much has changed about it since its inception.

They take your order over a speaker box while you sit in the car and they operate a cash only business. You can't miss it; it says it on the menus and their signage, and it's one of the first things they say when you press the button to place your order... "Hi, welcome to Nip N Sip. We're cash only, is that okay?" They make it super easy though; tax is included in everything, and all prices end with 25 cent increments.
Onto the star of the show, and my ode, to the Hammy Sammy.
Is the Hammy Sammy the best ham sandwich in Lansing?
Hammy, if I may call you that, I was so wrong about you.
What I thought was going to be another ham sandwich turned out to be, quite possibly, the best ham sandwich I've ever had. There's something about the combination of the type of bread and ham that's used, along with that perfect amount of lettuce, tomato, and mayo, that really knocks this sandwich out of the park. The bread is sturdy and delicious, and the whole sandwich warmed up, making for the perfect meltiness with the swiss cheese.
You bet your bottom dollar I made it a meal with fries, coleslaw, and a drink. I opted for the strawberry shake, and I', so glad I did because it was the perfect sweet treat to wrap up the meal.
Also, shout out to the employee who poked the holes in the top of my take out container to keep my sammy from getting soggy. There were no soggy bottoms here.
All in all, I love you, Hammy Sammy. And I now understand why everyone in Lansing is so obsessed with you.
