Something new is being implemented in Ann Arbor that has me wondering how long before we might see it in East Lansing.

Sobriety Tests for E-Scooters Coming to Ann Arbor

This summer, FOX 2 Detroit reports that Ann Arbor's City Council voted unanimously "to add a layer of protection for the riders [of e-scooters] and everyone around them."

Currently, the City of Ann Arbor contracts with Spin to set up e-scooters around town for public use. According to a spokesperson for Spin, they hope to roll out an app that has a sobriety test of sorts.

From the hours of 10 p.m. and 4 a.m., riders would be required to take and pass a reaction-based test on their phone. Fail, and you get locked out of the app—and the ability to ride a Spin scooter—for six hours.

At this time, there's no word on when Spin anticipates having the app up and running. But, I wonder what the response will be to it when it does.

Having lived, worked, and commuted through a college town for the last 14 years of my life, there's certainly a higher than average amount of drinking that takes place in a smaller area. Lots of young people drinking can make for some poor decisions, I've seen it... Shout out to the college student who looked me dead in the eye while I had the right-of-way, stepped right in front of my car in the middle of the street while I was driving, and held his hand out for me to stop as if he was a crossing guard... I do not think of you fondly.

All of that to say, this might not be the worst idea for a college town. Will East Lansing look at doing something like this in the future? Only time will tell.
