I'm not going to lie, going to ground beef or steak is a go-to comfort food of mine. But that might all be changing this year, as the prices on ground beef are set to sore here in the state of Michigan.

Beef Prices Soaring in Michigan

On average, the price of beef has been on the rise across the Midwest. In March of 2025, ground beef went from $5.79/lb to $5.80/lb in April. That is up over 10.8% year-over-year. At the same time, we saw a jump in ground chunk beef up 13.6% year over year.

Things like sirloin steaks have also risen in cost year over year, seeing a 3.4% increase from about a year ago. With that being said, we saw the similarities in the price hikes on round roast and chuck roast here in Michigan.

Grocers have initiated a warning, telling shoppers that they should stock up now on any meat they're looking for, as the supply tightness could cause the prices on meat sold here in Michigan to continue to rise.

Why Supplies Are Tight

Many herd reductions are the key to the cause of the price increases on ground beef products sold here in the state of Michigan. On top of it too, cattle supplies are at a 74-year low, which is partly drought-induced.

Even with the current price increases that we have seen here in the state of Michigan, it hasn't caused the consumption of beef to go down here in the state of Michigan. With the start of a major grilling season as well, grocers are looking to hike prices to keep up with that high demand.

Smart Shopping Tips

As a good note for shoppers out there, it is found that most plain-packaged, or store-brand beef, can run just about 10-15% cheaper than the name brands. If you're looking to save a few bucks, definitely read the labels.
